Four years ago, Brave People was born at 2212 E 3rd Ave:
Nestled in the residential edges of Ybor City, we've been quietly forging our brand from the local textures and grit around us. This city has been an incredible host and holds a prominent credit line in our story. We've grown from a one-man band into a truly multidisciplinary team while at this space.
What was literally a small home a block away from one of Ybor's many cigar factories became our base of operations, and as our team grew so did the work that we were doing. We converted the living room into a breakout session space, the dining room into a meeting room, and even turned the small bedroom in the back into a private office and recording studio. Creativity was a prerequisite for cramming a full-service agency into a space like that and it made our digital work feel all the more powerful because of the physical work which facilitated it.
With growth, however, comes outgrowth--and with 10+ people in and out of the office and roughly 1500 sq. ft of space, you begin to hit limitations that choke your productivity. It was our time to move.
That leads us to now. After a year of searching (and mostly failing), we've finally found a new home in the up and coming Tampa Heights neighborhood that we’re ecstatic to create from.
Ybor City will always be near and dear to our heart, but after years in one of the oldest districts in Florida it was time for a change. Tampa Heights felt like it was in many ways a perfect analogy for both the work that we are doing and the city as a whole.
Interestingly, when we first walked into the 4300 sq. ft building we noticed a wall adorned with massive black and white pictures of Tampa and Franklin Street itself from the 1920s. A trolley line split the road while buildings teamed with businesses—a clear depiction of a neighborhood that was once the epicenter of the city. Yet what once began as the center of industry went dark, and over the decades the area faded into the background as the city-center changed again and again.
A space that someone once saw fit to document as a representation of Tampa Bay itself slowly fell into disrepair, and it seems as if only now is the heart beginning to reveal itself once again. This street has needed a pioneering presence. Someone to remember the area’s potential and cast vision for what it will look like going forward. Someone brave. In that sense, we feel an obligation to be pioneers, not only in regards to the services that we provide, but about the area that we work in.
As a fast-growing team, we love being a part of a vibrant set of businesses and residents which are restoring this area, and putting a new and unique mark on it. Truly, all of this is the very reason that we’ve stayed in Tampa in the first place. Where it might have been easy to relocate to another city, we’re committed to this place and being a part of its renaissance.
It feels fitting in a way, that from the rooftop view above our loft, we have a front row seat in watching Tampa Bay make a name for itself. We love our block and we want to tell its story—just like we want to tell yours.
